I Was Here Review

From the author of If I Stay comes a beautiful and compelling novel that combines first love and loss into a magnificent and breathtaking novel. I was here will leave readers with that sensational feeling that comes from reading a truly gripping novel. I Was Here had me on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t put it down. This book is a definite a favourite of mine and I really want to read more from Gayle Forman.

When I picked up I Was Here I had never really read Gayle Forman’s books before. But I had to love it, it was impossible not to. I wanted more of Cody’s story and I didn’t want to let the book go. I also connected to the characters and felt like I could feel everything they were feeling it was just magnificent. The plot was one I hadn’t seen coming, it had a shocking twist that left me speechless and I could never have predicted.

If I were to describe this book in 3 words they’d be Beautiful, heartbreaking and magnificent. I couldn’t think of anything bad to say it was just so good. I would love to read more of Gayle Forman work and hope it’s as good as I was here.

What I liked about this book was that it wasn’t just about a girl committing suicide or glamorising suicide and it didn’t try to be but it actually addressed the topic as a whole. It was about the effects of suicide and depression on the person and there family. It told the other side to the story and how life is after. I think Forman is putting forward the idea that depression and mental illness isn’t treated as well and as sensitively as it could be which is why sometimes the suffers chose to take their own life. I also think to wants to show that there needs to be more done to support those who want to take their own life before it’s too late. As like Meg many may turn to support groups which can sometimes encourage suicide and not support them in the right way. This book doesn’t shy away from sensitive themes and handles them wonderfully.

I was here is the story of Cody who following her friend megs suicide has been suffering. Desperate to know what caused Meg to take her own life, Cody embarks on a journey to find closure and the person responsible for her best friends death. Cody finds more than truth and answers on her trip though when she meets Ben. Who is he? Is he the reason Meg took her own life? Find out in this wonderful novel that will leave you on the edge of your seat. I Was Here deals with themes such as suicide and depression which Forman handles with sensitivity and compassion.

The characters were great and I felt like they were real. They weren’t badly written stereotypical book characters. They had real life problems and real feelings that are real and honest. They didn’t have it all and they had to struggle and suffer to get to where they were at the end of this novel. Ben definitely went through a transformation in this book as did Cody as she started to discover the truth about Meg.

I would recommend this book to fans of YA, Romance and mystery. This book has great suspense and leaves readers hooked. This is a great blend of tragedy, love and closure. It’s a great pleasure to find a book like I Was Here that’s the rare kind of wonderful. I gave this book 5/5 stars for great suspense and heartbreaking novel.
